Pre-Hip Replacement: Ankle Pumps, Quad Sets, Leg Raises

The following exercises build strength. You’ll also use them after surgery to help speed your recovery. Ask your physical therapist or surgeon if you should exercise one or both legs. Discuss with your healthcare provider or physical therapist about which exercises are right for you. You may also be given special instructions. And unless you’re told otherwise, try to do each exercise at least  5 to 10  times,  2 times a day.

If you feel shooting pain or abnormal discomfort in your joint, back, or in your chest stop the exercise immediately. Stop exercising if you feel dizzy or have a feeling of passing out.

Ankle pumps

After surgery, ankle pumps will help prevent circulation problems, such as blood clots. They also help strengthen your calf muscles. This can help in providing support and stability to lower limbs. Practice ankle pumps by pointing and flexing your feet.

Quadriceps sets

The quadriceps are a group of muscles found on the front of your thigh. Strengthening the quadriceps will increase the overall strength, stability, and balance of the lower part of your body.

  • Lie in bed with your legs straight. Keep your toes pointed toward the ceiling. Slowly tighten the muscle at the front of the thigh as you press the back of your knee down toward the bed.

  • Hold for 5 to 10 seconds. Then slowly relax the leg to the starting position.

Straight leg raises

This exercise also strengthens the quadriceps (thigh) muscles.

  • Lie in bed. Bend one leg. Keep your other leg straight on the bed.

  • With your toes pointed toward the ceiling, tighten your thigh muscle.

  • Slowly lift your straight leg as high as you can, but not higher than  12 inches. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds. Slowly lower the leg to the starting position.
